Kylian Mbappe’s departure from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is proving contentious, as the Ligue 1 champions reportedly owe him €80 million. This dispute has further strained relations between Mbappe and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, who is enraged by Mbappe’s decision to leave the club for free at the end of his contract in June. Al-Khelaifi’s anger is compounded by Mbappe’s broken promise not to exit in such a manner and the fact that Mbappe’s next destination is Real Madrid, whose president Florentino Perez has a rocky relationship with Al-Khelaifi.

According to L’Equipe, Real Madrid is unwilling to pay PSG for a player who will be available for free, which has not sat well with Al-Khelaifi. This has led to significant tension and erratic behavior from the PSG president upon learning in the spring that Mbappe would not renew his contract.

Mbappe’s playing time suffered as a result, with him participating fully in only 11 of PSG’s last 21 matches of the season. Additionally, PSG allegedly withheld his April salary and a scheduled bonus from February, saving the club €80 million according to sources close to the situation.

The root of the financial dispute lies in a promise Mbappe made last summer, agreeing to forgo his loyalty bonus if he decided to leave PSG. The club believes this justifies their actions, though Mbappe is distancing himself from the conflict to concentrate on Euro 2024 preparations. His legal team is negotiating with PSG to resolve the issue.

As for Mbappe’s future, the timing of his move to Real Madrid remains uncertain but is expected to be announced soon after the Champions League final and before the start of Euro 2024.
