Jurgen Klopp remains steadfast in his belief that Darwin Nunez’s promising journey with Liverpool is far from reaching its peak.

The striker showcased his prowess by netting a brace to propel the Reds to a resounding 5-1 victory over Sparta Prague, a result that significantly advances Liverpool’s prospects in the Europa League quarter-finals race. Nunez’s two goals in the first half of the last-16 first-leg clash elevated his season’s goal tally to 16.

This milestone surpasses his goal count of 15 from his debut campaign at Anfield, achieved in the summer of 2022 following his transfer from Benfica for a potential fee of £85 million. Impressively, Nunez accomplished this feat in three fewer matches.

While Nunez has encountered instances of squandering significant scoring opportunities, Klopp acknowledged this as a common occurrence among center-forwards worldwide. However, even on occasions when the Uruguayan striker fails to find the back of the net, Klopp remains convinced that Nunez’s presence will consistently unsettle opposition defenses.

Speaking about Nunez’s performance, Klopp expressed, “He had an absolutely more-than-OK first season but he had to adapt, that’s done, [he is] settled in the middle of the team. Wonderful guy, wonderful boy, loves to play for this team and this club together with these boys, and he has quality coming out of his ears, to be honest.”

Acknowledging the inherent variability in strikers’ goal-scoring abilities, Klopp emphasized Nunez’s resilience and unwavering commitment to the team’s cause. Despite occasional misses, Nunez’s attitude remains unfazed, demonstrating his determination to persevere. Klopp believes that Nunez’s capacity for development is far from exhausted, highlighting his continuous threat on the pitch.

Klopp elaborated, “But it’s like strikers are: sometimes they score, sometimes they don’t score. Is he already at his absolute peak in general? Not now for us, and can he develop? Yes. Is he a threat all the time? Yes, as well. And he has the most important attitude a striker needs to have – he misses chances, which all strikers are doing, but he is not really bothered by it. He just keeps going and that is why he has now a nice number of goals.”

Looking ahead, Klopp emphasized the ongoing importance of Nunez’s presence, emphasizing his consistent threat and ability to create space and opportunities for the team, even when he is not directly scoring.

Klopp concluded, “There are still games to come, opportunities to score. Even when he is not scoring, he is for us incredibly important because he is just a constant threat and gives us some spaces in areas and options to use.”
