Barcelona has initiated the process of securing the signature of Mason Greenwood, exploring innovative approaches to acquire the Manchester United forward in a cost-effective transfer this summer.

Currently on loan at Getafe, Greenwood has enjoyed a productive season, contributing six goals and five assists primarily from the right flank. With the 22-year-old likely to be offloaded by United this summer, given his absence from the club since his arrest in January 2022, the potential for Greenwood’s return remains uncertain, despite new executive Sir Jim Ratcliffe not completely ruling out the possibility. However, as Greenwood enters the final year of his contract with United, the club recognizes the potential controversy surrounding his return, while a sale could enhance their financial flexibility for summer acquisitions.

La Liga president Javier Tebas expressed his desire for Greenwood to stay in Spain, with several clubs expressing interest in signing the English talent following his resurgence this season. Barcelona aims to position themselves as frontrunners for Greenwood’s signature, reportedly establishing closer ties, although no formal agreement has been reached yet.

Barcelona views Greenwood as a cost-effective option to bolster their attacking options amid financial constraints. The club intends to create space for Greenwood by offloading a forward, envisioning him on the left flank, despite his preference for a central or right-sided role. Additionally, as part of Greenwood’s loan agreement with Getafe, the Spanish club is entitled to a share of any transfer fee received by United, even if Greenwood moves elsewhere such as Barcelona.

While United anticipates receiving over €30 million for Greenwood, Barcelona aims to reduce the cost by offering some of their promising ‘La Masia’ prospects as part of the deal. United is reportedly well aware of Barcelona’s youth academy and is interested in several promising youngsters who could be included in the negotiations for Greenwood.
