The 22-year-old signed with Liverpool in 2019 for €1.9 million but has only managed four senior appearances during his time at the club, spending the last three years on loan. Van den Berg, currently on loan at Mainz, has played regularly this season with 23 appearances across all competitions. He expresses readiness to become a significant figure in Liverpool’s main squad but acknowledges stiff competition for positions at Anfield and admits he may consider leaving the club to secure consistent playing time.

In an interview with Voetbal Nieuws (via Anfield Watch), Van den Berg stated, “If I return to Liverpool, they may want me to stay. However, if I foresee limited playing opportunities, I might opt to depart. Playing regularly is paramount to me.” Reflecting on his chances for the upcoming season, he remarked, “In the past, I didn’t see myself as a regular alongside Virgil [Van Dijk]. I’m uncertain about my prospects next summer. I believe I’m performing well and can compete at Liverpool, but cementing a starting position is another matter. Virgil and [Ibrahima] Konate present formidable challenges. It’s going to be tough.”

Speculation arises over Van Dijk’s future at Liverpool following Jurgen Klopp’s announcement of departure, although the defender still has 18 months remaining on his contract and currently serves as the club’s captain. Additionally, Jarell Quansah seems to have surpassed Van den Berg in Liverpool’s hierarchy, having returned from loan at Bristol Rovers and assumed the role of backup center-back for the 2023-24 season. With Joel Matip sidelined due to an ACL injury, Quansah has been heavily relied upon by Klopp, accumulating 18 appearances across all competitions this term.
