Manchester United’s pursuit of De Jong during Erik ten Hag’s initial tenure proved fruitless, leading them to instead secure Casemiro from Real Madrid for a hefty £70m fee. However, with Casemiro’s form under scrutiny, reports suggest United could revisit their interest in De Jong as part of a significant summer overhaul. With Sir Jim Ratcliffe acquiring a 25% stake in United and taking charge of the club’s transfer activities, there’s speculation of a renewed attempt to persuade De Jong to join Old Trafford.

Though some fans may view another pursuit of De Jong skeptically, circumstances have reportedly shifted, leading United to believe they have a better chance of securing a deal this time around. To bolster their chances, reports suggest Ratcliffe is willing to grant Ten Hag’s wish by facilitating a reunion with his former Ajax protege.

However, securing De Jong won’t be easy. While United agreed to a €75m (£64m) fee two summers ago, the escalating prices for top midfielders pose a challenge. Barcelona reportedly demands €100m (£85.5m) for De Jong, which may stretch United’s budget. Nevertheless, options are available, with suggestions that United could offer players in exchange to offset the cost.

Mason Greenwood emerges as a potential candidate for a swap deal, with his loan spell at Getafe earning plaudits. Despite Greenwood’s uncertain future at United, Barcelona’s reported interest could facilitate a deal, especially with Greenwood entering the final year of his contract.

Additionally, United could offer other players in exchange. Jadon Sancho, currently on loan at Borussia Dortmund, could be included, given his strained relationship with Ten Hag. Similarly, Antony, who has struggled at Old Trafford, could be offloaded as part of a swap deal, though his lack of contributions may deter Barcelona.

Lastly, Scott McTominay’s future remains uncertain, with the midfielder possibly being offered to Barcelona. Despite his consistent performances, a move to the Nou Camp, albeit as part of a swap deal, would surprise many. Overall, while securing De Jong presents challenges, United explores various avenues to bolster their squad in the upcoming transfer window.
