Manchester United supporters were left seething at a move made by Erik ten Hag during their match against Nottingham Forest.

Entering the game, United were desperate for a victory to brighten a dismal 2023. Their Champions League hopes had been dashed in the group stages earlier in the month, and prospects for qualifying for next season’s tournament seemed bleak.

The visit to the City Ground was a chance for the Red Devils to build on their 3-2 win over Aston Villa on Boxing Day. However, following a lackluster first half from both teams, Ten Hag took action that incensed United’s fanbase.

In an attempt to swing the game in his team’s favor, Ten Hag chose to replace the popular star Kobbie Mainoo with Scott McTominay. This decision was met with considerable discontent from the club’s supporters.

One fan vented: “Ten Hag out! That substitution is unforgivable!” Another expressed fatigue, stating: “Ten Hag, I’ve had enough.” A third disgruntled observer added: “This is grounds for dismissal.” More echoed similar sentiments, with one saying: “Ten Hag seems obsessed with McTominay,” while another questioned his judgment: “How? Is he even watching the game? He’s earning millions to make decisions like this. Unbelievable.”

Despite the backlash from fans, McTominay has arguably been among the club’s standout performers this season. The midfielder embodies the fighting spirit synonymous with the club and has delivered crucial goals on multiple occasions.

With 22 appearances for the 13-time Premier League champions across all competitions, including his cameo against Nottingham Forest, McTominay has scored six goals and contributed one assist.
