After placing 12th the previous season and currently holding the same spot, questions about Todd Boehly’s ownership of the team are being raised once more. After purchasing the team from Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich, the American businessman and Clearlake Capital spent more than €1 billion on new players, but the situation now appears far worse than it did before.
Even though the Blues broke the British transfer record twice in 2023, they continue to lose to teams that are considered to be inferior, and more and more club members are starting to have doubts about the current transfer strategy.
Chelsea’s transfer strategy has changed under Boehly from acquiring established, elite players to acquiring young, talented players from around the globe. As Mauricio Pochettino put it bluntly, Chelsea is currently stuck in mid-table mediocrity, and this needs to change even though the policy might still pay off in the future.
Pochettino queries the transfer regulations
In an effort to at least get Chelsea back into Europe, “Pochettino may ditch ‘project’ players in favour of big names,” according to The Telegraph. According to the report, the club has acknowledged that Boehly’s first full year in charge has been nothing short of a complete and utter disaster.
It’s very possible that in 2024 the Blues will go back to signing well-established superstars. In fact, Chelsea may go all out to sign players like Victor Osimhen or Ivan Toney in January as Pochettino wants to bolster the squad in three areas.
But this would completely destroy the club’s new wage structure, which was drastically changed under Boehly because young players usually don’t make as much money as well-known players. As Bayern have discovered since acquiring Harry Kane, this could then lead to further issues as an increasing number of players are requesting significant wage increases.
