Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is “more than ready” to take over if Manchester United decides to hire him, according to Fabrizio Romano, who spoke exclusively to FOOTBALLWAVE. However, Romano noted that the club’s priority is to communicate any decision to current manager Erik ten Hag first.

Erik ten Hag, who has secured silverware in consecutive seasons at Old Trafford, is facing uncertainty after leading Manchester United to their worst-ever Premier League finish, placing eighth. Despite victories in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, there are doubts about his future, and Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club’s leadership are carefully considering potential replacements.

Former goalkeeper Paul Robinson has urged the club to sack Ten Hag and immediately hire Pochettino. Meanwhile, the club’s board is conducting a thorough review of Ten Hag’s performance and considering significant squad changes.

As the off-season progresses, Ten Hag is anxiously waiting to see if he will lead Manchester United into the 2024/25 season, which includes Europa League action thanks to their FA Cup triumph at Wembley. Since leaving Chelsea, Pochettino’s name has been frequently mentioned, alongside other candidates like Thomas Tuchel, another former Chelsea manager, who has also been linked to the position. Concurrently, Manchester United has been holding new discussions with Ten Hag.

Romano emphasized that Pochettino is eager to return to management immediately, having been described as an “outstanding” manager by Eddie Howe. He highlighted that Pochettino is ready to take on the role at Manchester United without needing a break. However, the club’s immediate focus remains on making a final decision about Ten Hag and informing him of their plans before potentially moving forward with another coach.

In Romano’s words: “Mauricio Pochettino is another coach who doesn’t feel he needs to take some time before the next step. He wants to return as soon as possible. So I’m sure in case Manchester United decided to go for him, he would be more than ready to restart and to be back in the business immediately. But again, at the moment, the priority for Manchester United is to decide on Erik ten Hag, inform Ten Hag, and then eventually to go for another coach.”
