Liverpool are preparing to bid for Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins as new manager Arne Slot eyes his first significant signing.

Slot is targeting the England striker, who has just had his best season yet, scoring 27 goals across all competitions and helping Villa secure a Champions League spot. Despite Watkins signing a long-term deal in October, Liverpool are ready to make a move for him.

The Sun reports that Liverpool views Watkins as the perfect replacement for Darwin Nunez, who has struggled to impress at Anfield. Nunez finished the season with 11 goals but has faced ongoing criticism for his finishing, and Barcelona has shown interest in him.

Watkins, admired by Slot, has proven to be a prolific No. 9, a priority on Slot’s list. The 28-year-old fits the profile Liverpool is seeking.

Currently, Watkins is competing with Ivan Toney to be Harry Kane’s backup for England. A strong performance at the Euros could increase his value, making it more challenging for Villa to retain him as they prepare for their European campaign.

Watkins joined Villa from Brentford for a club-record fee of £28 million. He has since demonstrated his worth, potentially commanding a significant profit if sold, leaving Unai Emery to consider potential replacements.

However, Watkins has shown no desire to leave. When he signed his new deal, he said: “I feel like this is the best place for me to play my football. I’ve still got a lot to achieve here.”

Villa, clear in their ambitions, have previously fended off interest in their top players. Arsenal had shown interest in Douglas Luiz, but Villa rejected their offers and recently secured Emery with a new five-year deal.

Meanwhile, Liverpool might undergo a reshuffle in their attacking options. Besides Nunez, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz also need to deliver consistently. Mo Salah’s future remains uncertain with his contract running down and rumors of a move to Saudi Arabia persisting.
