Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has pointed out a key difference between his own early career and that of Kobbie Mainoo. Rooney joined United at 18 and quickly made a name for himself, eventually becoming the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Mainoo, though also making a significant impact early in his career, is doing so in a much weaker squad. Despite the team’s struggles, the young midfielder performed admirably in their recent 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, where he partnered with Sofyan Amrabat in midfield. Leandro Trossard scored the lone goal of the match.

Before the game, Rooney voiced concerns about United’s heavy reliance on the 19-year-old Mainoo this season. He highlighted that, unlike Mainoo, he benefited from the support of experienced players who helped him through his early mistakes.

“I had all these senior players around me who, you know, I made a lot of mistakes when I was young. But I got a lot of help from my teammates,” Rooney told Sky Sports. “With Mainoo at the minute, he’s having to be the main player at times, which is too much for him. And what we’re going to see, which is natural, is performance will drop, his confidence will drop, and he needs a bit of protection, and I don’t think he’s getting that at the minute.”

Rooney’s comparison highlights the importance of experienced guidance in a young player’s development. While Rooney had the advantage of a strong support system, Mainoo appears to be under greater pressure due to the team’s current reliance on him, despite his young age.
