Bacary Sagna, former Manchester City right-back, has criticized the Manchester United players for appearing to ‘give up’ following their humiliating 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday night.

United’s dismal performance marked their record-breaking 13th Premier League defeat of the season, leaving them languishing in eighth place in the table with only three games remaining. Their decline has been evident since late February, with just two wins in their last 10 Premier League matches.

This string of poor results has intensified the pressure on manager Erik ten Hag. Under his leadership this season, United have regressed, raising doubts about whether he will continue in charge for a third term next season.

While Ten Hag bears some responsibility for United’s struggles, facing scrutiny over his coaching methods, the players must also be held accountable for their dismal run of results. According to Sagna, a former City defender, the manner of the defeat at Selhurst Park suggests that the players have lost motivation and determination.

Sagna remarked to Paddy Power, “There is no momentum at Manchester United. If it was easy for any coach, it would be different. Losing 4-0 to Crystal Palace, people will question Erik ten Hag and his ability to train the team, but it seemed like the United players have given up on this season.”

He emphasized the unpredictability of football from one season to another, citing the example of Arsenal and Mikel Arteta, where demands for the manager to step down were prevalent, but the situation turned around positively over time. Sagna believes Ten Hag deserves more time and urged to focus on finishing the season positively.

Sagna advocated against dismissing Ten Hag solely based on one bad season, highlighting that although the manager makes selections, it ultimately comes down to the players’ performances on the pitch. He suggested that this season has been particularly challenging for United, with circumstances seemingly working against them.

In summary, Sagna’s critique underscores the collective responsibility of both the manager and the players for Manchester United’s disappointing season. While Ten Hag faces scrutiny, Sagna urges patience and emphasizes the need for a united effort to salvage the remainder of the season.
