Manchester United’s prolonged pursuit of a striker they’ve been monitoring for two years could be derailed as reports emerge of Arsenal joining the race. Back in July 2022, discussions were underway between United and the representative of Benjamin Sesko, who was then playing for Red Bull Salzburg, regarding a potential transfer to Old Trafford. However, the 20-year-old forward opted to join Red Bull Leipzig instead, where he has since impressed with his performances, drawing comparisons to Erling Haaland, particularly for his role at Salzburg following Haaland’s departure for Borussia Dortmund.

Sesko’s tally of 13 goals in 37 appearances across all competitions this season, including six goals in his last 11 Bundesliga outings, has understandably piqued interest, with Arsenal reportedly eyeing him for the upcoming summer transfer window. The parallels with Haaland aren’t coincidental, as Sesko himself has acknowledged studying videos of the Norwegian striker on YouTube to refine his own skills. Despite his admiration for Haaland, Sesko recognizes the monumental challenge of surpassing his level, acknowledging that only a select few reach such heights in the sport.

Arsenal’s pursuit of Sesko has been corroborated by multiple sources, including the Evening Standard, which indicates that the young forward has a €50 million (£42.7m) release clause in his current contract with Leipzig. With other clubs like Chelsea also monitoring the situation, it’s evident that United will need to act swiftly if they intend to secure Sesko’s services after their lengthy pursuit. Currently, United’s striking options are led by Rasmus Hojlund and Anthony Martial, the latter of whom could depart when his contract expires at the end of the season.
