In an exclusive interview with Football Insider, former West Ham and Celtic striker Frank McAvennie suggested that Liverpool may have identified their next head coach.
McAvennie indicated that Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi lacks the stature required for the role, while expressing enthusiasm for the prospect of appointing Zinedine Zidane.
Liverpool is set to bid farewell to current manager Klopp at the conclusion of the season, following his earlier announcement of departure.
McAvennie commended De Zerbi’s performance at Brighton but raised doubts about his ability to manage the egos within Liverpool’s dressing room.
The pundit emphasized the importance of maintaining Liverpool’s attacking and entertaining style of play post-Klopp.
“I just hope it is someone that has got the same philosophy as previous Liverpool managers,” he stated. “Liverpool are all about attacking football and entertaining the crowd. I would hate to see that going away.”
While acknowledging De Zerbi’s managerial prowess, McAvennie questioned whether he possesses the requisite reputation to command the respect of Liverpool’s star-studded squad.
“Graham Potter was doing it at Brighton, but went to Chelsea and couldn’t handle it,” McAvennie observed. “It wasn’t his fault because everyone who has gone there since can’t handle it.”
He continued, “De Zerbi is doing alright, but I think it will be someone else. I think there will be a name coming in. I don’t know who. It would be great if they got Zidane.”
Despite Liverpool’s strong performance under Klopp this season, competing for the Premier League title alongside Manchester City and Arsenal, McAvennie’s speculation suggests the club is already planning for the future.
