Manchester United is contemplating the possibility of bringing Wolves manager Gary O’Neil on board for a coaching role at Old Trafford.

New co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is aiming to restructure the club’s framework by appointing a coach rather than a traditional manager.

According to a report from ESPN, Manchester United is keen on securing O’Neil’s services, although there is uncertainty regarding whether he would assume the role of replacing Erik ten Hag or working alongside him.

However, the report indicates that “no decisions have been made” regarding Ten Hag’s future at the club at this juncture.

Manchester United has yet to finalize a decision regarding Ten Hag’s tenure. While the club’s exhilarating FA Cup triumph against Liverpool before the international break may have bought Ten Hag some breathing space, the leadership is still deliberating on whether to retain him for the upcoming season.

As Ratcliffe and his associates mull over Ten Hag’s suitability to guide the team forward, they have been linked with other managerial candidates such as Gareth Southgate, Thomas Frank, and Roberto De Zerbi in recent days.

Although O’Neil has been informed of Manchester United’s interest, the specifics of the potential role they are considering for him remain unknown.

O’Neil could potentially feature in Manchester United’s plans to revamp their coaching staff during the summer transfer window.

Given that Wolves have O’Neil under a three-year contract, Manchester United would likely need to negotiate compensation if they intensify their pursuit of him.

If O’Neil opts to join Manchester United, it would mark another significant off-field maneuver orchestrated by Ratcliffe. Already, Ratcliffe has successfully enticed Omar Berrada, a highly respected figure, away from Manchester City, with Berrada set to assume the role of CEO this summer.

Additionally, Manchester United is eyeing Newcastle United’s Dan Ashworth for the position of sporting director.

Under Ratcliffe’s new stewardship, further changes are anticipated at Old Trafford during the summer transfer window.
