Manchester United is reportedly making a surprising move by eyeing Real Madrid goalkeeper Andriy Lunin as a potential replacement for Andre Onana.

According to Nacional, Manchester United has made an offer for Lunin as they prepare for the upcoming summer transfer window.

Lunin has impressed during his time at Real Madrid this season, stepping in admirably for the injured Thibaut Courtois, who has been sidelined with an ACL injury.

Despite his solid performances, Lunin is aware that Courtois will likely reclaim his position as the first-choice goalkeeper upon his return, prompting him to consider a move to a new club.

Manchester United’s interest in Lunin comes at a time when they are evaluating their options regarding their current number one goalkeeper, Andre Onana, who has had a disappointing first season at the club.

Onana joined Manchester United last summer from Inter Milan for a substantial fee of €51 million plus €4 million in bonuses, following an impressive stint with Inter Milan in the Champions League.

Expectations were high for the 27-year-old goalkeeper, especially after his stellar performances in the Champions League, where he played a pivotal role in Inter Milan’s journey to the final.

However, Onana’s debut season at Manchester United has been marred by errors, although he has shown signs of improvement in 2024.

He has been criticized for several costly mistakes, particularly during Manchester United’s Champions League group stage matches against Galatasaray, Copenhagen, and Bayern Munich.

Reports from Germany suggest that Bayern Munich is interested in acquiring Onana as a long-term replacement for their veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, who is set to turn 38 this year.

Meanwhile, Lunin’s contract with Real Madrid is set to expire in 2025, making him a viable option for Manchester United if they decide to pursue a transfer.

The potential acquisition of Lunin could provide Manchester United with a reliable goalkeeper option as they look to strengthen their squad ahead of the upcoming season.
