According to Gazzetta Dello Sport (on page 8), Arsenal is leading the race to secure the services of Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres, and they could potentially do so at a reduced fee.

There is growing speculation that Arsenal will make significant investments this summer to acquire a quality striker, with recent reports suggesting that they are willing to splash out on Gyokeres.

Following his departure from Championship side Coventry City, the Swedish international inked a deal with Sporting CP that included a hefty £86 million release clause. However, Gazzetta Dello Sport, who are at the forefront of the chase for his signature, suggest that Arsenal could secure his transfer for as little as £43 million.

This potential bargain deal raises eyebrows, especially considering Gyokeres’ impressive statistics this season. The 25-year-old has amassed 49 appearances, netting 36 goals and providing 14 assists. Sporting CP is renowned for demanding top dollar for their star players, making the suggested fee even more surprising.

It’s remarkable that despite his standout performances, particularly during his title-winning campaign the previous season, no Premier League outfit made a move for him. Gyokeres showcased his scoring prowess during his stint at Coventry City, where he tallied 22 goals and 12 assists in 50 appearances before his move to Sporting CP, for a modest fee of £20 million.

The Swedish international swiftly established himself as one of Europe’s most prolific goal-scorers during his time in Portugal.

Reports suggest that both Arsenal and Chelsea are vying for Gyokeres’ signature. However, Arsenal’s participation in the Champions League provides them with a competitive edge in this pursuit.

Elite athletes are often drawn to the challenge of competing in top-tier competitions such as the Champions League. With Arsenal set to feature in the competition next season, Gyokeres may be enticed by the prospect of showcasing his talents on the grand stage. On the other hand, Chelsea’s European participation remains uncertain.

Gyokeres would undoubtedly relish the opportunity to grace the Champions League stage next season, especially after his successful Europa League campaign, where he notched five goals and two assists in nine appearances. If Sporting CP is willing to entertain a £43 million transfer fee, Gyokeres could find himself donning the Arsenal jersey next season.

Should the deal materialize, Arsenal could finally secure the clinical striker they have been longing for in Gyokeres. The prospect of a forward trio consisting of Saka, Gyokeres, and Martinelli has the potential to rival the best attacking combinations in Europe next season.
