Zinedine Zidane, the World Cup winner and three-time Champions League-winning manager, has hinted at the possibility of taking on the managerial role at Manchester United, following reported interest from Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

Zidane, who has been without a club since 2021 after leaving Real Madrid for the second time, has previously expressed reservations about managing an English club due to his limited proficiency in English. In 2022, he stated to L’Equipe, “If I go to a club, it’s to win. I say this in all modesty. That’s why I can’t go anywhere. For other reasons, too, I might not be able to go everywhere. Which ones? The language, for example.” He elaborated, “Certain conditions make things more difficult. When people say to me: ‘Do you want to go to Manchester?’ I understand English but I don’t fully master it. I know that there are coaches who go to clubs without speaking the language, but I work differently. To win, many elements come into play. It’s a global context. Me, I know what I need to win.”

However, in a recent interview filmed for a documentary on the life of Italian football legend Marcello Lippi, Zidane has signaled his readiness to return to coaching. When asked about his coaching future, Zidane responded, “Why not? Anything can happen. But at the moment I’m doing something else. I am sure that I will return to the bench, I would like to coach again.”

Reports from France have suggested that Ratcliffe, United’s new co-owner overseeing all footballing matters, sees Zidane as his ideal managerial appointment and is willing to go to great lengths to secure his services, with INEOS ready to support the move.

This development indicates a potential shift in Zidane’s stance regarding managing an English club, as he expresses openness to returning to coaching despite his previous reservations about language barriers. With Zidane’s track record of success and Ratcliffe’s reported interest, the possibility of seeing Zidane at the helm of Manchester United appears increasingly plausible.
