Manchester United is reportedly considering Gareth Southgate as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag, according to a recent report.

Ten Hag, the current Manchester United manager, is facing intense scrutiny following consecutive losses in the Premier League. Despite a series of positive results, much of the goodwill Ten Hag had garnered was quickly erased after a surprising defeat to Fulham at Old Trafford followed by a comprehensive defeat by Manchester City. Ten Hag’s remarks following the City match were dismissed as unrealistic, leading to renewed questioning of the 54-year-old’s capabilities. There are reports that players are losing confidence in Ten Hag, with some expressing dissatisfaction with his training methods, which they claim are leading to injuries. Additionally, some players are already convinced that Ten Hag will be sacked.

New investor Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group have not publicly expressed confidence in Ten Hag, given Manchester United’s current position in the league standings. Manchester United is currently 11 points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa and a staggering 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool. Ratcliffe and his team are contemplating making a managerial change.

According to ESPN, a shortlist of potential replacements for Ten Hag has already been compiled. The list includes Roberto de Zerbi, Thomas Frank, and Gareth Southgate among the options under consideration.

While the inclusion of Brighton manager De Zerbi and, to a lesser extent, Brentford coach Frank may not come as a surprise, Southgate’s name raises eyebrows. The England national team coach has not managed a club since his relegation from the Premier League with Middlesbrough in 2009. Southgate’s future after Euro 2024 is uncertain, as his contract with the England team expires in December rather than immediately after the tournament. There is a possibility that Southgate would need to be released from his contract if he were to take on the Manchester United job.

As things currently stand, Southgate would be considered an outsider in the race for the Manchester United managerial position. However, given his past relationship with soon-to-be Manchester United sporting director Dan Ashworth and INEOS executive Sir Dave Brailsford, Southgate could emerge as a serious contender to replace Ten Hag.
