During Real Madrid’s 2-2 draw against Valencia on Saturday, March 2nd, reports emerged that Real Madrid winger Vinicius Junior was subjected to racial abuse, allegedly being called a derogatory term. The Athletic reported that a fan in the stands directed racist language towards the Brazilian attacker, who notably scored twice during the match. Subsequently, police were reportedly called to the scene, and La Liga has initiated an investigation into the incident.

If proven true, this incident would only affirm Vinicius’ previous assertions regarding racism in Spanish football. The 23-year-old had previously experienced racial abuse from Valencia fans during a match in May 2023. At the time, he took to Instagram to express his sentiments, stating, “La Liga belongs to racists. The championship that once belonged to Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano, and Messi today belongs to racists. It wasn’t the first time, nor the second, nor the third. Racism is normal in La Liga. The competition thinks it’s normal, the federation does too, and the opponents encourage it.”

As the investigation unfolds, Real Madrid is focused on their upcoming Champions League fixture in midweek (March 6th), where they aim to secure passage to the quarter-finals. They face RB Leipzig in the second leg of their round-of-16 tie, holding a 1-0 advantage. Vinicius is expected to play a pivotal role in this crucial knockout encounter, having contributed two goals and three assists in four Champions League appearances this season. Additionally, he has scored nine goals and provided four assists in La Liga matches during the current campaign.
