Former Barcelona forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has shed light on his departure from the club to Chelsea in the summer of 2022. Despite his brief tenure, the Gabon international left a lasting impression at the Nou Camp, quickly winning over fans with his performances.

Aubameyang found solace at the Nou Camp following a turbulent exit from Arsenal due to disciplinary issues under manager Mikel Arteta. However, the seasoned striker swiftly silenced any doubts about his form by showcasing his prowess in Barcelona’s colors.

Barcelona turned to Aubameyang in the January 2022 transfer window, securing the veteran striker on a free deal with Xavi’s approval. He made an immediate impact, needing only four games to notch his sole hat-trick for the Blaugrana. Aubameyang netted 11 goals in 17 league appearances, including a brace in a memorable 4-0 El Clasico triumph over Real Madrid in the latter half of the 2021-22 season. Additionally, he contributed two goals in six UEFA Europa League matches, albeit Barcelona’s exit in the quarterfinals to Eintracht Frankfurt.

In an interview with journalist Gerard Romero, Aubameyang revealed the reason behind his swift departure from Barcelona after just six months. He cited the club’s financial constraints, stating that his sale was necessary to alleviate the financial burden. He expressed, “The reason behind me leaving Barça was the club’s financial issues. I was one of the few players that the club could sell. If not for those issues, I think I could’ve stayed for many more years.”

However, Aubameyang endured a challenging spell at Chelsea, scoring only three goals in 21 appearances during the 2022-23 season under managers Graham Potter and Frank Lampard. His contract at Stamford Bridge was terminated after a single season, leading him to join Olympique Marseille.

At Marseille, Aubameyang has rediscovered his form, tallying 14 goals and seven assists in 29 appearances thus far. Moreover, Aubameyang expressed his desire for Barcelona to consider appointing Jurgen Klopp as their next manager. Having previously played under Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, Aubameyang emphasized Klopp’s energy and success as a coach.

With Xavi set to depart Barcelona at the end of the ongoing season, the club is in search of a new manager for the 2024-25 campaign. Klopp, who announced his departure from Liverpool this summer, presents a potential candidate. However, convincing Klopp, who appears inclined towards a sabbatical, could pose a challenge for the reigning Spanish champions.
