After steering the Reds to another Wembley final on Wednesday night, the 56-year-old, Jürgen Klopp, is set to oversee Liverpool’s remaining fixtures in the 2023-24 season before concluding his illustrious eight-and-a-half-year managerial reign at Anfield. Klopp, who has guided the club to six major trophies during his tenure, revealed that he, along with assistant managers Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz and elite development coach Vitor Matos, will leave their positions at the end of the season. Lijnders, in particular, is eager to pursue his own career in management.

In a statement confirming the decision, Klopp explained the reasons behind it and emphasized the need for clarity to facilitate an orderly transition. He acknowledged his deep affection for the club, city, supporters, team, and staff but stressed that his decision was driven by a sense of running out of energy and an awareness that he cannot continuously sustain the managerial role. Despite revealing the decision in January, Klopp clarified that he informed the club of his intention in November.

Klopp, appointed as Liverpool manager on October 8, 2015, has left an indelible mark on the club, leading them to triumphs in the UEFA Champions League, Premier League, FIFA Club World Cup, FA Cup, League Cup, and UEFA Super Cup, as well as the FA Community Shield.

The decision to step down came as Klopp felt a diminishing ability to handle the job repeatedly and highlighted the behind-the-scenes planning that involves setting up for the next season. Klopp pointed out that the thought of his eventual departure started surfacing during discussions about potential signings and future plans. Despite last season being challenging, he was determined to help the team recover and felt that the current season was the right time to step back.

With five months remaining in the current campaign and Liverpool still competing in four competitions, Klopp will postpone any formal goodbyes until his final game in May. He emphasized a collective focus on pursuing trophies and urged the team to make strength out of the decision.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon expressed deep appreciation for Klopp’s contributions, acknowledging the sadness at losing such a caliber manager. Gordon underscored the respect for Klopp’s wishes, ensuring a “business as usual” approach until the end of his tenure while preparing for the future. Gordon highlighted Klopp’s impact, stating that his achievements and the joy brought to supporters will never be taken for granted. The club’s priority is to maintain progress on the pitch and conduct due diligence for a future without Klopp. Gordon thanked Klopp for everything he has done and reassured fans that updates on significant developments would be provided.
