Roma has terminated Jose Mourinho’s managerial stint after a lackluster performance in Serie A, marking the end of his two and a half-year tenure. The former Manchester United manager, who took charge in May 2021, achieved a Europa Conference League victory in his inaugural season and reached the Europa League final in the 2022/23 season.

Despite these accomplishments, Roma finds itself in ninth place in Serie A, with just one win in the last six league games, culminating in a 3-1 defeat to AC Milan in Mourinho’s final match. The decision to part ways was deemed a necessary change for the club’s best interests.

Mourinho, at 60 years old, had set out to improve Roma’s Serie A standing following a seventh-place finish in the 2020/21 season. Despite notable signings such as Tammy Abraham, Rui Patricio, and Matias Vina, financial constraints compelled player departures to adhere to UEFA Financial Fair Play regulations.

In Mourinho’s debut season, Roma secured a sixth-place finish and clinched the Europa Conference League. The subsequent season saw them maintain the same league position and reach the Europa League final after notable victories against Red Bull Salzburg, Real Sociedad, and Bayer Leverkusen.  Roma’s owners, Dan and Ryan Friedkin, expressed gratitude to Mourinho for his passion and dedication, deeming the decision essential for the club’s future.

The statement extended best wishes to Mourinho and his team in their future endeavors, recognizing his role in ending the club’s 11-year trophy drought and guiding them to European finals.  Mourinho’s departure coincides with a challenging period for Roma in Serie A, prompting the club to now face the task of appointing a new manager to navigate the remainder of the season. This decision underscores the fiercely competitive nature of football management and the perpetual quest for success in the ever-evolving landscape of European football.
