Manchester United is reportedly set to pursue the highly talented 19-year-old Benfica midfielder, Joao Neves, who has already made a mark as a rising star in European football, featuring in 27 matches this season, including six in the Champions League.  Despite Neves being under contract with Benfica until 2028, his deal incorporates a release clause of €120 million (£103 million).

Manchester United has identified him as a top priority target and is planning talks for a potential summer transfer, a move deemed crucial following Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s acquisition of a 25 percent ownership stake and subsequent influence on football operations at the club. Footballwave reports that this strategic approach is aimed at securing Neves ahead of competition.

This pursuit aligns with Manchester United’s broader goal of fortifying the team, particularly in the defensive midfield position. With Casemiro approaching his 32nd birthday and the likelihood of Sofyan Amrabat being a loan signing, additional reinforcements in this area are seen as essential.

Despite Benfica manager Roger Schmidt’s assertion that key players won’t be moving in the January transfer window, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has expressed excitement about the prospect of Neves joining the club. Fernandes lauded Neves, expressing his eagerness to have him at United.

However, he acknowledged that the final decision rests with Neves and the manager’s vision.  Back in September, MEN: Sport reported United’s intention to target significant acquisitions in four different areas in the upcoming summer, with center midfield being one of the positions in focus, despite recent additions like Amrabat and Mason Mount. The pursuit of Joao Neves underlines the club’s commitment to strengthening key areas for sustained competitiveness.
