Last summer, Benzema made headlines as one of the inaugural global superstars to join the Saudi Pro League, securing a lucrative two-year deal reportedly valued at €100 million annually after his contract with Real Madrid concluded. Despite being a significant addition to Saudi Arabia’s sports initiative, Benzema’s stint has been marred by disciplinary issues, leading to his exclusion from Al-Ittihad’s mid-season training camp. Allegedly missing training three times last year and displaying an unsatisfactory attitude, the 36-year-old faces disapproval from Al-Ittihad manager Marcelo Gallardo, who decided to sideline him for failing to meet reporting deadlines.

Amidst these off-field challenges and Al-Ittihad’s lukewarm defense of their Pro League title, currently placing them seventh, Benzema has displayed on-field prowess this season, notching nine goals in 15 games. However, recent reports from Spain suggest that Benzema is eyeing a return to Europe, with Fichajes naming three teams expressing interest in the French striker this winter.

Among these suitors, two are familiar to Benzema, with Real Madrid looking to “welcome” him back to bolster Carlo Ancelotti’s attacking options. Lyon, Benzema’s childhood team where he spent 12 years before joining Real in 2009, is also keen on bringing their former star back to rejuvenate their Ligue 1 campaign amid relegation concerns.

Yet, the most captivating prospect appears to be Manchester United, where Erik ten Hag envisions Benzema as a “valuable reinforcement” to strengthen the team and provide competition for Rasmus Hojlund in the attacking department. A potential loan move seems the only feasible route for Benzema’s transfer to Old Trafford this month, with United likely monitoring the situation in Saudi Arabia, poised to acquire the Ballon d’Or winner if his departure gains approval from Al-Ittihad.
