The second of Manchester United's three planned moves to extend Aaron Wan-Bissaka's contract by one year has been activated.
Wan-Bissaka was nearing the end of his tenure at Old Trafford, but Manchester United took action by activating a clause in his contract that extends it automatically for an additional year, stretching until June 2025. This move provides the club with more time to negotiate a long-term deal with the right-back.
According to The Daily Mail, Manchester United is prepared to boost the salary of the former England U21 player, recognizing his shift from being on the outskirts of Erik ten Hag’s plans to becoming a regular in the manager’s strategies. The 26-year-old’s outstanding performances have led data analytics experts SciSports to designate him as a crucial player for the team at Old Trafford.
Currently earning €105,000 (£90,000) per week, Wan-Bissaka could potentially see an increase in his wages as the Red Devils have signaled their readiness to raise this figure.
Initial discussions regarding his contract began in September but were put on hold due to Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos group takeover. These talks are slated to resume later in the season.
Among Manchester United players, Wan-Bissaka is one of three individuals with a clause in their contract that the club can unilaterally trigger for extension, as reported by Fabrizio Romano. Victor Lindelof has already secured an additional year at Old Trafford, while Hannibal Mejbri is poised to claim an extra season with the club.
However, there’s a different approach planned for centre-back Raphael Varane. Despite his weekly wages amounting to €435,000 (£375,000), deemed as not offering value for money, the World Cup winner’s relationship with Ten Hag is currently under scrutiny. Consequently, the club might allow Varane to leave on a free transfer during the upcoming summer.
Similarly, Anthony Martial is set to depart Old Trafford as Manchester United has opted not to extend his contract for an extra year. Martial’s time at the club has been marred by injury troubles and a decline in form over the past few seasons, leading to this decision.
