After a patchy season debut, the Red Devils are making the acquisition of a world-class center back a priority in the winter transfer window.
Manchester United may make Nice’s former Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo their primary priority when they sign a center-back in January.
The French international Todibo has long been a priority for United, who made the move known in the summer after Harry Maguire turned down a £30 million move to West Ham.
Despite making a few strong appearances for Barcelona as a youth after beginning his career at Toulouse, Todibo was soon let go.
The French defender, who saw little play during loan stints at Schalke and Benfica, has found some stability at Nice and is currently a member of Les Blues’ international roster.
Footballwave reports that United plans to revive their pursuit of Todibo in January in an effort to bolster their defense, however Newcastle may present a challenge.
The ownership of Nice by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS group, who are potential United buyers, may complicate a future deal should the group decide to invest in the 13-time Premier League winners.
“I’m not going to lie and say that I didn’t have the thought to tell myself that perhaps I should play in a ‘top club’ to increase my chances [of playing for France], but there are also guarantees when playing at Nice,” Todibo said in response to a recent question from L’Equipe regarding his unsuccessful move to United.
“I had a different experience from what I had in previous professional settings. My thought process was far more careful and in-depth. I didn’t want to select the wrong option. I maintained my composure.
“Now that I’ve started, reflection is much more important. I’m awaiting the project’s final presentation.
“What am I supposed to do? Why have I come? You shouldn’t show up at a club in that manner. At Nice, I know what I have. Why venture into the uncharted? Therefore, all must be evident. When I made my first transfer, I was eighteen. The level of thought was not as high.”
Todibo is anticipated to cost approximately £35 million, and Barcelona will get a 20% cut of whatever price is given to Nice.
