Liverpool are reportedly making headway in negotiations for a potential transfer move for Sporting Lisbon center-back Goncalo Inacio as they seek a replacement for Virgil van Dijk.

Sources close to the matter have informed CaughtOffside that there is some uncertainty surrounding Van Dijk’s future at Liverpool. As a result, the club has made signing a new central defender one of their top priorities this summer. However, they are also in the market for a new midfielder.

Inacio is currently Liverpool’s top target, and although he has a €60 million release clause at Sporting, CaughtOffside understands that there is increasing optimism that the Portuguese club might be willing to compromise on the fee. The 22-year-old Portugal international is considered a talented player and has been on the radar of other top clubs, including Manchester United and Arsenal. Despite this, Liverpool are now the clear favorites to secure his signature.

Inacio is not the only defender Liverpool is considering. The Merseyside club is also exploring alternatives in case the deal for Inacio does not materialize. Other defenders on their radar include Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo, Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, and Willian Pacho of Eintracht Frankfurt. It remains to be seen which of these names will be the most feasible option for Liverpool, but Inacio remains their primary focus, and negotiations seem to be progressing well.

In addition to bolstering their defense, Liverpool’s new manager Arne Slot is also looking to strengthen the midfield. Slot is an admirer of Quinten Timber from his former club Feyenoord. Additionally, Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners remains a player to watch for Liverpool, even though Juventus have long been considered the favorites for the Netherlands international.

Youssouf Fofana had also been on Liverpool’s radar, but negotiations never progressed, and he is now set to join AC Milan.

As Liverpool looks to navigate the summer transfer window, their primary focus appears to be on securing Goncalo Inacio from Sporting Lisbon to reinforce their defense. However, with several other defensive and midfield targets also being considered, it is clear that the club is aiming for a comprehensive overhaul to address key areas and strengthen the squad for the upcoming season. The progress in negotiations for Inacio is a positive sign, but Liverpool fans will have to wait and see how these transfer plans unfold.
