Liverpool forward Luis Diaz has expressed that Mohamed Salah’s potential departure would be a significant blow to the team. The 32-year-old Salah, who signed his current contract in 2022, is now in the final year of his deal. Although rumors swirled about a possible exit this summer, Salah remained at Anfield, but contract extension discussions have reportedly stalled. Despite the uncertainty, Salah has had a strong start to the season, scoring in all three of Liverpool’s matches, helping them to second place in the Premier League, just behind Manchester City on goal difference.

Diaz, who netted twice in Liverpool’s 3-0 victory over Manchester United in the Premier League, was assisted on both occasions by Salah. Speaking to Telemundo, as reported by the Daily Mail, the Colombian said that Salah’s departure would severely impact the club:

“It would be tough for us and for Liverpool. It will hurt us a lot. He still has a year left to think about it, and it’s not an easy decision. He always gives his best, right from the beginning. Losing such an important player would be very difficult for us. However, it’s his choice, and we respect that, but I hope he stays.”

After the match at Old Trafford, Salah himself hinted that it might have been his final game at the iconic stadium, saying to Sky Sports (via the Daily Mail):
“I was on my way to the game thinking, ‘this might be my last time (at Old Trafford)’. Nobody from the club has spoken to me yet about a new contract. It’s not in my hands; it’s up to the club. We’ll have to wait and see.”

He added, “As everyone knows, it’s my final year here. I just want to enjoy it without thinking too much about my contract. Right now, I feel free to focus on football, and we’ll see what the future holds.”

Salah joined Liverpool in the summer of 2017 and has since become one of the team’s most crucial players.

Since his arrival at Anfield seven years ago, Salah has enjoyed an incredible run with Liverpool. In 352 appearances across all competitions, he has amassed an impressive 214 goals and 92 assists. The Egyptian forward has won every major title with the club, except for the UEFA Europa League.

In the previous season, Salah contributed 25 goals and 14 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions, in what was the final campaign under legendary manager Jurgen Klopp. His latest goal at Old Trafford also tied him with Alan Shearer for the most goals scored by a player (10 goals at Leeds United) in away games against a single Premier League club.
