Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher criticized Dominik Szoboszlai for missing a crucial opportunity during Liverpool’s commanding 3-0 Premier League victory over Manchester United on Sunday, September 1.

The match saw Liverpool, now under the guidance of Arne Slot following Jurgen Klopp’s departure in May, deliver an exceptional performance at Old Trafford. Luis Diaz was the standout player in the first half, scoring twice before Mohamed Salah added a third goal in the 56th minute, sealing Liverpool’s dominance.

However, the game took a surprising turn in the 80th minute when Szoboszlai, who had a clear chance to further increase Liverpool’s lead, failed to capitalize. Instead of taking a straightforward shot, the Hungarian midfielder hesitated, taking multiple touches inside United’s penalty area, ultimately missing the chance to put the ball in the back of the net.

Carragher, who was commentating for Sky Sports, did not hold back in his criticism of Szoboszlai’s decision-making in that moment. He expressed his frustration, questioning Szoboszlai’s intentions and warning of the potential consequences had United managed to score and shift the momentum. Carragher’s remarks, quoted by the Mirror, included: “What is he doing? Is he trying to be cocky? If United get one back, the crowd gets up… we saw yesterday what happened to Everton [in the 3-2 loss against Bournemouth]. That’s ridiculous from Szoboszlai. That’s just ridiculous, it’s unprofessional.”

Adding to the criticism, Manchester United legend Gary Neville also weighed in, condemning Szoboszlai’s actions as careless. Neville remarked, “He’s messing about there. He should be absolutely rollocked by the rest of his teammates for that. That’s a liberty. It’s the sort of thing you’d do in training and get a telling off, never mind in a match at Old Trafford.”

Despite the missed opportunity, Szoboszlai, who joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for £60 million last summer, had an otherwise solid performance. The 23-year-old midfielder completed 35 out of 39 passes, provided an assist, created three scoring chances, and won three of his five duels during the match.

Meanwhile, Luis Diaz, who was instrumental in Liverpool’s victory, expressed his joy after the match. Speaking to Sky Sports, Diaz reflected on his contribution and Liverpool’s overall performance, stating, “I’m very happy to score goals to help the team. The most important thing is that the team is doing so well, winning games and winning this important game. I’m looking forward to the rest. I’m so happy to perform so well, I want to keep this rhythm and help the team all the time.”

Diaz, at 27 years old, enjoyed a memorable outing at Old Trafford. His first goal came from a well-placed header, followed by a clinical first-time right-footed strike, bringing his tally to three goals for the 2024-25 season. To date, the 55-cap Colombia international has recorded 27 goals and 14 assists in 101 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool.

While Liverpool’s victory was a significant statement in the early stages of the season, the missed opportunity by Szoboszlai will likely be a point of focus as the team looks to maintain their momentum in the coming matches. With the club showing promise under Slot’s leadership, attention will be on how Szoboszlai and the rest of the squad respond to Carragher’s and Neville’s pointed critiques, especially as they aim to challenge for the Premier League title.
