Arsenal has officially announced the signing of Italian international Riccardo Calafiori from Serie A club Bologna on a long-term contract. The 22-year-old defender, who was part of the Italy squad at Euro 2024, joins Arsenal following an impressive season with Bologna.

The deal, valued at around £42 million, commits Calafiori to Arsenal until 2029. His arrival is expected to further strengthen a defense that was one of the best in the Premier League last season, conceding only 29 goals and securing 18 clean sheets. Calafiori’s ability to play both as a center-back and a left-back, combined with his defensive skills, were significant factors in Arsenal’s decision to sign him.

Despite interest from top European clubs like Real Madrid and Juventus, as well as another Premier League team, Calafiori was determined to join Arsenal. According to Sky Sports News, there were multiple offers for the Italian defender, but he remained committed to Mikel Arteta’s side, having promised to join the Gunners.

Calafiori’s career began in the youth academy at Roma, where he spent 12 years progressing from the youth teams to the first team. He also gained valuable experience on loan at Genoa during the 2021/22 season before establishing himself at Bologna.

This transfer is Arsenal’s second major signing of the summer, following the permanent acquisition of goalkeeper David Raya from Brentford. The club has also added young goalkeepers Tommy Setford and Lucas Nygaard to their roster.

With the addition of Calafiori, Arsenal has made a strong statement of intent as they prepare for the upcoming season, aiming to build on their defensive solidity and compete for top honors.

Arsenal fans can expect more signings to come as the club continues to strengthen its squad for the new season.
