Liverpool are on the brink of securing their first signing under new manager Arne Slot, with a deal for Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo reportedly in its final stages. The Reds have been actively searching for a new right-winger to eventually replace Mohamed Salah, and the Japanese international is considered one of the best young talents in La Liga for that position.

Kubo, 22, joined Real Sociedad from Real Madrid for just £5.5 million in the summer of 2022. Since then, he has made 85 appearances for the Spanish club, scoring 16 goals and providing 14 assists. According to the Japanese outlet Sponichi, Liverpool is close to finalizing the signing of Kubo, having had a bid of around £55 million accepted for the winger.

Due to a 50% sell-on clause in Kubo’s contract, Real Madrid will receive approximately £27.5 million from this deal. Kubo is expected to continue improving with experience and, as a left-footed right-winger, he appears to be an ideal replacement for Salah, whose future at the club remains uncertain amid ongoing speculation.

Reports indicate that Liverpool is poised to secure Kubo as a replacement for Salah. Salah, who has just 12 months left on his contract at Anfield, is not expected to leave this summer but could depart in a year. The 32-year-old remains a crucial player for Liverpool, having scored 25 goals in all competitions last season.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, another key player for Liverpool, is also in the final year of his contract, as is Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk. When questioned about the futures of these key players, Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes stated, “These are private matters between club and players. The only concern I and Arne have about these situations is the total commitment from the players to the cause for next season, and we’re absolutely convinced that will be the case.”

Regardless of Salah’s potential departure, it makes strategic sense for Liverpool to plan ahead, and Kubo could prove to be an excellent long-term addition to Slot’s squad. Kubo’s versatility allows him to play on the left wing or as an attacking midfielder, providing cover in multiple positions if Liverpool successfully complete the deal.

Real Madrid legend Zinedine Zidane is reportedly monitoring Kubo, having previously praised his performances during a season-long loan at Mallorca in 2021/22. “I think he’s having a good season,” Zidane said about Kubo back in 2019. Real Madrid also retains the option to re-sign Kubo for £27.5 million due to a buyback clause in his contract. However, Sponichi’s report suggests that Liverpool has won the race for his signature.

If completed, Kubo’s signing would mark a significant addition for Liverpool, as the club looks to the future and aims to maintain its competitive edge with the integration of young talent into the squad.
