Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise has decided to leave the Premier League and join Bayern Munich for £50m, despite interest from Manchester United and Chelsea. The 22-year-old was sought after by several top clubs, including Newcastle United and Liverpool, but ultimately chose Bayern, who agreed to a €60m (£50.7m) fee with Palace, including add-ons.

Both Chelsea and Newcastle made approaches, but Olise is set to sign a five-year contract with Bayern, rejecting a lucrative offer from Chelsea. Back in May, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Manchester United had also engaged in talks with Olise’s representatives, showing strong interest in the winger who had a standout season, scoring 10 goals in 19 Premier League appearances.

Olise had nearly joined Chelsea last summer when they activated his £35m release clause, but he chose to stay at Selhurst Park and later signed a new contract with Palace, extending his stay until 2027 and increasing his release clause to around £60m. The Telegraph, via the Shields Gazette, indicated that Olise preferred Bayern due to their Champions League participation, while Manchester United, Newcastle, and Chelsea missed out on spots in Europe’s top club competition. United will compete in the Europa League after winning the FA Cup final against Manchester City, a result that placed Chelsea in the Europa Conference League and left Newcastle without European football.

While Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, and Aston Villa will represent England in the Champions League next season, Chelsea had reportedly reached verbal agreements on personal terms with Olise and were negotiating with Palace over the release clause. However, it’s unclear how concrete those agreements were.

Before last season, Olise had played 63 Premier League games, scoring just four goals. His performance improved significantly, drawing high praise from Palace manager Oliver Glasner for his four goals and three assists in the final six games of the season, including a double against Manchester United. Glasner highlighted Olise’s individual qualities and his improved form after finding a suitable position for him in the team.

Born in London, Olise started his career in the Chelsea academy before moving to Manchester City’s youth setup. He joined Reading in 2017, debuting against Leeds United in March 2019. At Reading, he scored seven goals and provided 14 assists in 73 games, leading to his transfer to Palace in July 2021 for around £8m. His initial contract with Palace was a five-year deal set to run until 2026.

Olise’s departure is not the only potential summer transfer involving Crystal Palace players. Winger Eberechi Eze is also reportedly on Manchester United’s radar and is currently on international duty with England at Euro 2024.
