According to people close to the team, Arsenal still thinks highly of Alexander Isak, a striker for Newcastle, as Footballwave has learned.
Arsenal is highly interested in securing the services of Swedish striker Alexander Isak, although they haven’t confirmed any immediate January signing. Isak holds high regard within Arsenal’s recruitment team, with both head coach Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu closely monitoring the former Real Sociedad and Borussia Dortmund player.
Back in the summer of 2022, Arsenal aimed to bring Isak to the team, seeking to reunite him with his former Sociedad teammate, Martin Odegaard. However, negotiations fell through due to concerns over his release clause, which Arsenal deemed excessively high. Consequently, Isak joined Newcastle for a fee of £58 million, potentially rising to £63 million with add-ons. Since then, he has thrived at Newcastle, showcasing his talent with 19 goals in 37 Premier League matches.
Despite previously missing out on acquiring Isak, Arsenal’s interest in the 24-year-old striker remains unwavering, particularly considering his impressive goal-scoring record in the Premier League.
While the Gunners may not actively pursue a January transfer for Isak, there’s a possibility of revisiting negotiations in the upcoming transfer window. Arsenal is keen on securing an elite striker and has also shown interest in Brentford’s Ivan Toney.
Newcastle currently faces financial constraints due to Financial Fair Play regulations, and their sporting director, Dan Ashworth, has hinted at the eventual need to sell players, stating, “At some stage, you need to trade.” Although Newcastle may consider Isak indispensable, the intensity of Arsenal’s pursuit for his signature in the next window remains to be seen.
Within the club, there’s an acknowledgment of the necessity for substantial investment in their frontline to boost their chances of competing for the Premier League title against the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool in the forthcoming seasons.
