Liverpool have reportedly received a major boost in their pursuit of a potential transfer target for 2025. The Reds are believed to have initiated discussions with the representatives of Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze during the summer transfer window. According to Football Insider, the 26-year-old attacking midfielder is now open to leaving Crystal Palace next year in search of a fresh challenge.

Liverpool, alongside Tottenham Hotspur, have maintained their interest in Eze, who could follow in the footsteps of former Crystal Palace teammate Michael Olise by leaving Selhurst Park for a new opportunity. Olise recently departed for Bayern Munich, and Eze might be considering a similar path as his career progresses.

It’s reported that a £68 million release clause in Eze’s contract, which expired without being activated over the summer, will become effective again in 2025 (Daily Mail). The failure to trigger the release clause earlier reportedly left Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish surprised. However, with Eze seemingly ready for a new chapter and the clause set to reactivate next year, Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, has been given further motivation to pursue the playmaker.

Eze has had a promising start to the 2024/25 season, scoring three goals in eight matches. However, only one of those goals has come in the Premier League. This follows two consecutive seasons in which he scored double digits in England’s top flight (Transfermarkt). While Crystal Palace has struggled this season, finding themselves in the relegation zone following a recent defeat to Everton, Eze’s individual performances have still been noteworthy.

The challenging situation at Crystal Palace, combined with Olise’s successful move to Bayern Munich, may fuel Eze’s desire to leave and seek new challenges. Should Liverpool decide to make a move for the 26-year-old, they would have to fend off competition from other clubs, but Eze’s versatility could make him an appealing option for Liverpool manager Arne Slot. He is capable of playing in various positions across the midfield and attack, which would add depth and flexibility to Liverpool’s squad.

Richard Hughes is expected to closely monitor Eze’s performances throughout the season, especially when Liverpool faces Crystal Palace in their upcoming Premier League encounter at Selhurst Park.
