Manchester United are poised to sign a new central defender this summer as they prepare for Raphael Varane’s departure, with his contract expiring at the end of the month. Among the names linked to the club is Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo. According to a report from Sport, Manchester United are making a strong push to acquire the Uruguayan star.
To persuade Araujo to join Old Trafford, the Red Devils are reportedly willing to nearly double his current wages, from £114,000 to £228,000 per week. Barcelona, on the other hand, are aiming to extend Araujo’s contract beyond June 2026. If they fail to secure an extension, they are expected to demand at least £63.5 million for his transfer.
Despite Araujo’s impressive performance in La Liga, where he completed 90 percent of his passes and averaged nearly three long balls per game, United should be cautious about overspending due to his injury history. The 25-year-old defender also boasts a 73 percent success rate in aerial challenges, along with 4.3 recoveries and 2.5 clearances per game, making him a strong candidate to replace Varane.
However, since the start of the 2020/21 season, Araujo has missed nearly 75 games for club and country due to injuries. This injury-prone nature is reminiscent of Varane’s own issues. Given these concerns, Manchester United should not offer more than £45 million for Araujo’s services.
The club has struggled with defensive injuries over the past year, and it is crucial not to overspend on another center-back who has a history of injuries since moving to Europe. While Araujo would be a fine addition to the squad, financial prudence should guide the club’s negotiations to ensure they secure a dependable player without risking an overinvestment.
