Speaking about Chukwuemeka, Maresca reiterated his stance, saying, “Carney is a very good player, but with the number of players we have, we decided it would be better for him to go somewhere else, play 30 or 35 games, and prove himself rather than stay here and get fewer opportunities.” Unfortunately for Chukwuemeka, that move didn’t materialize, and he remains at Stamford Bridge. Maresca did give him some minutes recently, though he wasn’t involved in the latest match, and expressed hope for more playing time ahead.

However, in light of Maresca’s comments, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea are planning to sell Chukwuemeka in the January transfer window. According to Romano, the club is actively working on a solution to find him a new team. Despite being signed for £20 million from Aston Villa in 2022, Chukwuemeka has struggled to secure a regular spot in Chelsea’s lineup.

Romano explained that Chelsea were willing to let Chukwuemeka leave over the summer but only if a club could guarantee him significant playing time. Approaches from teams like AC Milan were turned down because they couldn’t promise him a regular starting role. As Romano noted, “Maresca has always been transparent with his players, and during the summer window, Chelsea wanted Carney to go to a team where he could feature in at least 38 games, not one where he would remain on the bench.”

Now that Chukwuemeka has stayed but isn’t playing consistently, Chelsea is expected to reignite their efforts to find him a club in January. Both the player and the club agree that sitting on the sidelines for too long is not ideal, and discussions are already underway to secure a move that will benefit all parties.
