When chances did arise, they were often squandered until substitute Joshua Zirkzee, making his debut, scored a late winner. Ten Hag emphasized the importance of finishing off games more effectively, particularly in the penalty box.
He remarked, “One area we need to improve is our ability to kill games in the box. We saw the same issue during the friendlies and in our recent loss to Manchester City in the Community Shield. We created enough chances and shouldn’t have to rely on a late winner. We need to be more composed and decisive to finish off teams.”
Ten Hag acknowledged that the slow start could be attributed to the beginning of the season, with players still finding their rhythm. However, he expressed confidence in the team’s scoring potential, noting that there are plenty of players capable of finding the back of the net.
The winning goal came from Dutch forward Zirkzee, who came off the bench to convert a late cross from Alejandro Garnacho. Ten Hag praised Zirkzee, highlighting his journey back to form after an injury at the end of his time at Bologna, which kept him out of the European Championship for the Netherlands.
“We have to address some deficiencies in his game,” Ten Hag said. “But he brought qualities that we were missing, and he demonstrated them immediately. He’s very good at linking up in combination play, which fits well with our team. However, he needs to consistently get into the box and score goals, and he did that tonight. He’s a Manchester United player, and it’s great to see a striker come in and score on his debut.”
