With the transfer season swiftly closing, Liverpool’s pursuit of their first summer acquisition has encountered multiple obstacles. Although neither of the two deals has materialised, the club has been connected to Anthony Gordon of Newcastle United and Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad.

The Reds will start the season against Ipswich Town without any new players, other than the appointment of Arne Slot as manager in place of Jurgen Klopp, who is still waiting for his first signing.

Slot, who was keen to add the Spanish player to his midfield, has been especially disappointed by the loss of Zubimendi, who was viewed as the perfect prospect for Liverpool’s number six position. But Liverpool might be looking at other options at this point.

The club has reportedly been contacted on the availability of Italian midfielder Marco Verratti, according to HITC. Verratti is not at the height of his powers, but Al-Arabi in Qatar has extended an invitation for him to come to Europe. Verratti’s availability has been communicated to Manchester United, Arsenal, and City in addition to Liverpool, the other Premier League teams.

During his tenure at PSG, Verratti—who is renowned for his ability to create plays—has been compared to Barcelona greats Xavi and Andres Iniesta, especially by Brazilian sensation Neymar. Though Liverpool will undoubtedly need to consider whether the seasoned midfielder can still provide the dynamism needed for Slot’s vision at Anfield, Verratti’s expertise may be useful.
