United’s initial £51m bid for Neves was unsuccessful last month. Record now claims that the club has upped their offer to £59m. However, this is their final proposal, and there is no clear indication that Benfica will agree to sell Neves.
Neves, who is 19 years old, has a £102m release clause in his contract. Benfica’s president, Rui Costa, is keen to keep him for the 2024/25 season. While a summer exit hasn’t been completely ruled out, it would likely take at least £85m for Benfica to consider letting him go.
Neves would be a significant signing for United, as he had an impressive breakout season with Benfica, excelling in the number six role. He maintained a passing accuracy of 90%, won two tackles and six duels per game, and averaged 6.4 recoveries, completing 62% of his take-ons. Despite his young age, Neves has demonstrated considerable maturity, and Costa has called him a “born leader.”
Securing Neves would make a strong statement for United, but it might require a higher fee to convince Benfica to sell. Given United’s limited transfer budget, making another offer might be unlikely. Instead, they might shift their focus to acquiring Paris Saint-Germain’s Manuel Ugarte.
