Liverpool may find themselves competing with Real Madrid to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s standout player, Florian Wirtz.

Although the summer transfer window hasn’t officially opened, Liverpool is already being linked to several potential new signings. One player frequently mentioned as a possible target for Liverpool is Wirtz.

The adaptable midfielder played a key role in helping Leverkusen win the Bundesliga title under the management of former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso. Wirtz’s impressive performances have led to speculation about a significant transfer this summer, although earlier reports have suggested that a move might not happen this year.

According to German outlet Sport Bild, Real Madrid is interested in signing Wirtz and intends to make their move in 2025. The report indicates that the Spanish club hopes to not only sign Wirtz but also bring Alonso on as their manager, replacing Carlo Ancelotti in a year’s time.

Liverpool has been previously noted as showing interest in Wirtz, but Real Madrid is reportedly eager to add the playmaker to their team, aiming for a year after securing Kylian Mbappe. It is mentioned that Wirtz could command a transfer fee of €130 million (£110 million) next summer for any interested club.

Back in March, Wirtz’s agent, who is also his father, commented on the Leverkusen star’s future. He emphasized the 21-year-old’s commitment to the Bundesliga club and his positive experience working with Alonso.

“Florian has a contract in Leverkusen until 2027,” Hans-Joachim Wirtz told Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger in March. “That is roughly how long he will stay at Leverkusen.
“There’s no definitive answer to what will happen beyond that. We should wait for the next two years and then see what happens.”

“Florian is very fortunate to have Xabi Alonso, who brings numerous qualities,” Hans-Joachim Wirtz added. “He has a great relationship with the entire team. It’s the right coach at the right time.”
