Liverpool appears to be falling behind in the race to sign Florian Wirtz, with Real Madrid reportedly taking the lead in securing a £127 million transfer for the summer of 2025.

Wirtz, one of the standout young talents from Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga title-winning campaign and a hopeful for Euro 2024 success on home soil, has attracted interest from top clubs across Europe. While Liverpool was mentioned as a possible destination, recent updates indicate a less favorable outlook for the Reds.

According to Marca, two agreements are in place that set the stage for the 21-year-old’s transfer from the BayArena to Santiago Bernabeu, not Anfield, in a year’s time. The first agreement, involving the player, his representatives, and Bayer Leverkusen, ensures that Wirtz stays with the German champions until the end of the 2024/25 season.

The second agreement, a verbal one with Real Madrid, involves personal terms being settled, allowing for the move to Spain in 2025. Real Madrid’s president, Florentino Perez, has reportedly indicated that finances will not be an obstacle, with the deal potentially reaching €150 million (£127 million).

This news follows a report from Germany highlighting Real Madrid’s interest in both Wirtz and Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, suggesting they could both join the Champions League holders in the same summer. Earlier this year, Alonso was considered for the Liverpool managerial position but ultimately withdrew, leading to the appointment of Arne Slot.

Currently, Wirtz is concentrating on his first international tournament, the European Championship, hosted in Germany. The German team will open the tournament against Andy Robertson’s Scotland and will also face Hungary and Switzerland in Group A.
