Andriy Lunin appears poised for a move to Manchester United after reportedly turning down a new contract offer from Real Madrid, according to Spanish sources.
Reports from Spain suggest that last month, Manchester United made a significant offer to entice the La Liga goalkeeper away from Los Blancos.
This month, Todo Fichajes, a Spanish outlet, has disclosed that Lunin has declined a contract extension proposed by Real Madrid and is now progressing towards joining Manchester United.
It is asserted that the English giants, with their illustrious history of 20 league titles, have presented an irresistible offer to Lunin’s agent, leaving only the negotiation of a transfer fee with Real Madrid pending.
Lunin, aged 25, whose current contract at the Bernabeu runs until 2025, is reportedly valued at approximately £30 million (35 million euros).
Last summer, Manchester United allowed their Golden Glove-winning goalkeeper, David De Gea, to depart on a free transfer after an impressive season in which he kept 17 clean sheets in the Premier League and conceded just 43 goals.
Following De Gea’s departure, United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, brought in Andre Onana, who has struggled to replicate De Gea’s success. Onana has managed only 8 clean sheets in the Premier League this season, conceding 51 goals in 34 games.
This move has been perceived as a misstep for Manchester United, highlighting the need for a high-quality goalkeeper ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Lunin has showcased his abilities for Real Madrid, particularly in the absence of Thibaut Courtois. The Belgian goalkeeper recently returned to the squad and featured in matches against Bayern Munich and Cadiz in La Liga.
With Courtois’s return, Lunin’s opportunities for regular first-team action at Real Madrid are likely to diminish, making a move to Manchester United an appealing prospect for the Ukrainian goalkeeper. United, in turn, are prepared to offer him the chance for consistent first-team football.
