Arsenal has been rumored to be interested in signing a striker who has previously won a title. This summer, the Gunners may look to secure a new number nine, a move many believe is the final piece needed for Mikel Arteta’s squad at the Emirates Stadium.
Since early 2024, Arsenal has been linked with several top-tier strikers. Currently, a World Cup winner is reportedly on Arteta’s summer transfer shortlist.
A journalist has provided an update on Arsenal’s interest in Lautaro Martinez. Premier League clubs have been monitoring Martinez for some time. The Argentine international has been in contract negotiations with Inter Milan, having helped them win the Serie A title in April.
With no agreement yet, Martinez’s current contract at San Siro is set to expire in the summer of 2026, attracting the attention of various teams.
Italian journalist Fabio Santini has shared insights on Inter Milan’s stance regarding Martinez’s contract extension beyond 2026. According to Santini, the Italian champions are offering the striker a deal worth between €9 million and €9.5 million annually. However, Martinez is demanding €12 million per year. Santini suggests that if Martinez does not compromise, Inter may be willing to sell him.
Santini also mentions that both Martinez and his teammate Marcus Thuram are on Mikel Arteta’s radar for this summer’s transfer window. Nevertheless, Inter is likely to demand an extraordinary €140 million for Martinez.
In a conversation with TVPlay Official on Twitch, Santini stated, “Arsenal is reiterating their interest in Thuram this morning. In fact, they would like Lautaro as well. Inter isn’t entertaining the idea. However, if Arsenal offers €140 million, Inter would agree to sell Lautaro, especially if he insists on a salary of €12 million.”
Santini further explains that Inter prefers to sell players rather than offer exorbitant salaries due to their “winning and self-managing financial model.”
Santini believes a compromise might be reached at €10 million, aligning closely with Inter’s offer of around €9-9.5 million. If Martinez or his agents insist on €12 million, he may be sold.
Lionel Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever, has previously praised Lautaro Martinez. Messi, who has played alongside numerous top players, has publicly expressed his admiration for Martinez. After Martinez was linked with a move to Barcelona in 2020, Messi told Mundo Deportivo, “He’s amazing, he has amazing qualities. It was clear he was going to be a great player, and he’s really showing it now. He excels in one-on-one situations, is very strong, and scores a lot. He fights for every ball, perseveres, and finds solutions on his own. He is of very high quality and a complete player.”
This context highlights Arsenal’s interest in acquiring a proven striker like Lautaro Martinez, the complexities of his potential transfer, and the high regard in which he is held by fellow professionals like Messi.
