Liverpool icon Steve Nicol suggests that Trent Alexander-Arnold could be dispensable given the emergence of Conor Bradley as a potential replacement. Alexander-Arnold, currently serving as Liverpool’s vice-captain, faces uncertainty regarding his future as his contract expires in 2025, attracting interest from Real Madrid. Although Real Madrid is not expected to make an immediate bid, they could pursue Alexander-Arnold should negotiations between him and Liverpool falter.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Liverpool has yet to initiate discussions with the 25-year-old regarding a contract extension. Liverpool is also undergoing restructuring in their recruitment department and is set to appoint a new manager in the upcoming summer. However, they cannot afford to delay negotiations, mindful of Real Madrid’s interest.
Steve Nicol, an esteemed figure at Liverpool, opines that the club should entertain the idea of selling Alexander-Arnold if Real Madrid expresses interest this summer. Nicol acknowledges Alexander-Arnold’s offensive prowess but questions his defensive abilities. He contends that Liverpool is adequately equipped at right-back with the emergence of Conor Bradley, who, despite not being on par with Alexander-Arnold in terms of skill, offers superior defensive capabilities.
Nicol states, “Trent Alexander-Arnold is not a good defender, but he is so good going forward. If Real Madrid were to offer, I don’t know, 60, 70, 80 million, when you’ve got a young kid in Conor Bradley, who is a miles better defender but is great going forward – [but] isn’t in the same class as Trent – so it depends on the next manager, whether it’s a possibility.”
Conor Bradley showcased his offensive prowess during Northern Ireland’s match against Scotland by scoring a remarkable goal, ultimately securing victory for his team. Despite only making 18 senior appearances for Liverpool this season, the 20-year-old has already contributed with a goal and six assists, impressing in the absence of Alexander-Arnold. His teammate, Andrew Robertson, has endorsed Bradley’s potential, foreseeing him as a future standout player. Given Bradley’s promising performances and Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation, Liverpool may indeed contemplate parting ways with the latter.
