Liverpool is reportedly aiming to secure fullback Trent Alexander-Arnold with a new long-term contract amid the impending departure of manager Jurgen Klopp. Klopp’s announcement of leaving the club after a nine-year tenure at Anfield signals significant changes for Liverpool. Journalist Graeme Bailey suggests that the club is keen on preventing key players from departing in the wake of Klopp’s exit and, as a proactive measure, is planning to extend Alexander-Arnold’s contract, which is set to expire in 2025.

The English fullback, who emerged from the club’s youth system, has been a pivotal player under Klopp’s guidance, contributing 18 goals and 81 assists in 298 senior appearances for Liverpool. While Alexander-Arnold has displayed some defensive vulnerabilities, his attacking prowess has positioned him as one of the premier fullbacks in the game. Reports indicate that a new contract could elevate the 25-year-old to one of the top earners in the team, surpassing his current weekly wage of £180,000.

Klopp, recognizing Alexander-Arnold’s importance, appointed him as Liverpool’s vice-captain at the start of the current season. Throughout this season, the fullback has showcased his abilities with nine goals and nine assists in 25 games across various competitions. The club is evidently eager to secure his long-term commitment and maintain stability in the squad.

In the midst of Klopp’s impending departure, Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has emphasized the need for the team to remain focused on their goals for the remainder of the season. In an interview, Van Dijk expressed the difficulty of accepting Klopp’s decision but underscored the importance of concentrating on the tasks at hand. He acknowledged the emotional impact of the manager’s departure, stating that Klopp means a great deal to the players, the club, and the entire Premier League.

Van Dijk revealed that Klopp informed the team privately about his decision, and although it is a challenging situation, the players are determined to stay focused on their objectives. The captain articulated the team’s mindset, stating their intention to achieve their targets for the season and potentially end it on a high note, including celebrating the departing boss.

Despite the managerial transition, Liverpool remains actively involved in four competitions this season. The team is set to face Chelsea in the EFL Cup final, currently leading the Premier League table. Additionally, Liverpool has progressed to the Round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League and is preparing to take on Norwich City in the FA Cup fourth round at Anfield on Sunday, January 28. The club’s commitment to success on multiple fronts reflects their resilience amidst the changes on the horizon.
